Question by echostar: What is the connection between selfishness and lack of self confidence?
I am trying to find information on the internet about selfishness and self confidence.
I know someone who has low self esteem and low self confidence, and they are bringing it on themselves. They can be very selfish with their family but giving to their coworkers and this doesn’t make sense to me.
They lie about the stupidest things, and when they get caught they make the other person look like the bad one.
When they are selfish, their self esteem and confidence go down and they blame everyone around them.
They misunderstand others when they talk, they get angry easy when a family member tries to explain their bad behavior.
They need recognition and gratitude.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to a website that talks about this.
I have seen information of lack of self confidence people not being selfish……but is their something about selfishness and knowing what they are doing is wrong, lowering self esteem and confidence.
Thank you…….any thoughts you have and websites I can look at, are gratefully appreciated…..

What’s wrong with this website to find those answers? One part, well you have backwards. when they are selfish thier esteem goes down… Self esteem doesn’t go up or down. You either got it or you don’t. People with low esteem and confidence are selfish because they don’t believe in themselves, have no confidence that they’re gonna be able to sustain themselves from one period of time to the next. I know that I will never go hungry, even if I have no money.
Question by wobear7572301: How to apply confidence intervals to probability?
Hello. So the question is there are 200 people who are all making 95% confidence intervals (using the same data and etc) and determining if X falls within that confidence interval.
1) How many people are expected to find that X falls within their interval.
Is it 200*0.95 = 190?
2) What is the probability that all 200 students get X in their interval?
I was thinking that it is 0.95^200 but that can’t be right.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer by Milo 1) If you are to run a large number of confidence intervals, each based on a separate estimate for the mean (with confidence level (1 – alpha)), then yes, the expected number of confidence intervals containing the true mean would be n * (1 – alpha), or 200 * 0.95 like you said.
In general, this means that any future confidence interval (the sample has not yet been measured or tabulated) has a 95% chance of containing the true mean. It DOES NOT mean that an interval that has already been run has a 95% chance. Probability only applies to events which haven’t happened yet.
2) How to find the probability that all 200 students will get the true mean in their interval is a binomial distribution question. Sample size is n, probability of success, p, is 0.95. So, the probability of 200 independent successes would be (0.95) ^ (200), or 0.00003505, or 0.003505%. Even the most likely outcome, exactly 190 successes and 10 failures, has the relatively small probability of .1284, or 12.84%.
With 201 possible outcomes, no one of them will have a very large possibility. 190-10 is just the EXPECTED outcome.
How To Get Rid Of Social Phobias And Build Self Confidence
Self confidence is a psychological and emotional state of mind that responds to an individual’s need for recognition and self-acceptance. It’s one of the oldest and most studied concepts in psychology. It describes a positive but also realistic perception somebody has of himself or herself and of his or her abilities. Thus, people with self confidence usually have a better idea of what they are able to achieve and will be more likely to be successful in what they attempt. They are able to more easily admit and learn from their failures.
On the contrary, a lack of confidence may deter you from believing your actions or decisions will later work out the way you had planned. It can hence prevent the improvement of executive skills, strategic and management capacities all of which are necessary and mandatory things in today’s business world. The pre-occupation with how others will judge your work can also make you become excessively self-critical, which can distract you from tasks you would have otherwise been perfectly able to do.
Low self confidence will also affect your social life, as people with low self confidence tend to stay in their “comfort zone” and fear the risk of being rejected. This is called social phobia and presents a high degree of co-morbidity with low self confidence, but also other psychological diseases such as depression. People with low self confidence are scared of the judgment of others and will avoid meeting new people, which can result in isolation and even less self confidence. Low self confidence is a vicious circle that is difficult to break.
To the contrary, because they have faith in their own abilities, people with self confidence are able to do what they feel is right and don’t feel the need for the approval of their peers. They are also able to inspire confidence: your boss, employees, customers, friends or relatives are more likely to trust you or what you are telling them if you appear self-confident.
Many experiences can contribute to low self confidence. New research indicates that parenting style has a major impact on the development of the self confidence of a child. Corporal and mental abuses in childhood are for instance the worse for somebody’s self confidence, as well as family conflicts and divorce. Overprotective parents may also contribute to a child’s social phobia and hamper the independence necessary to develop self confidence. Failures and successes, for instance at school or in one’s professional life, also play an important role: losing a job or failing a class are among the numerous experiences that will negatively affect your self confidence.
There are however methods to overcome these bad experiences and increase self confidence. The first step to develop self confidence would be to learn to know yourself and your strengths. Acknowledging the fact that you are allowed not to be perfect and cannot be the best in everything you do will help you gain self confidence. Accepting yourself as you are is the key to gaining self confidence. But improving self confidence also requires that you start taking risks and giving yourself credit for your achievements. This is very simple advice which will help you build self confidence. You might also find several books which will claim they can help you gain self confidence, however not all of them are reliable.
Many people have low self confidence or are only capable of gaining self confidence in one or a certain number of areas of their lives because they constantly try to get other people’s approval and are afraid that they could fail. Many factors, such as childhood traumas, can explain why some people cannot have the wholesome life of a self confident person. Such persons also do not always know how to gain self confidence. But improving self confidence can now easily and effectively be done thanks to hypnosis and NLP.
As we have seen social phobia and low self confidence can be triggered by bad experiences or unconscious fears that may be difficult to overcome through self persuasion only. Confidence hypnosis and NLP on the other hand are able to get to the unconscious part of our mind and alter belief systems to boost self confidence. They are powerful tools that will help you address your fears and trust yourself to develop self confidence.
Self-Hypnosis for building self-confidence has been used for a few decades and has shown significant results in building self confidence. In a hypnotic state, reaching unconscious thoughts is a lot easier and, through hypnotic suggestion, you will be able to replace your negative thought patterns with positive ones to boost self confidence.

In many situations we would greatly benefit if we could build self confidence immediately. In fact, a lot of research shows that by doing quick confidence building exercises we can dramatically improve our performance in certain tasks.
Here are three quick and simple things you can do to build self confidence now. These have worked for me and they will work for you as well.
First of all your posture and the way you walk has a big impact on how you are feeling. If you are walking slowly or hunched over you will not feel very confident. Walking faster and with a sense of purpose makes you feel more confident.
The second exercise to try and think of some times when you felt really confident. Try to visualize this in your mind as clearly as possible. The clearer the picture is, the better you can relive the emotions you felt at that moment. Remember your mind cannot tell the difference between things you vividly imagine and things you are actually seeing now.
The third exercise to try is affirmations. The key to making affirmations work is to repeat them with emotion. Find some affirmations you like or create your own, it is just important that they are phrased positively.
While these exercises will give you a quick boost of self confidence, they can also be part of your long term self confidence building program. Remember it is like a muscle; you must constantly exercise it if you want it to grow.
Remember your main focus should be on building long term self confidence and not on short fixes. The best way to do this is to regularly schedule time everyday focused on a confidence building activity.
These activities could range from improving your guitar skills, reading books, or attending self help seminars.
Everyone at some point in their lives think they have low self confidence but don’t let a few situations lead you to believe that your self confidence level is extremely low.
If the truth is told almost everyone could use more self confidence. Being shy does not necessarily mean you have low self confidence.
Keeping a journal about your progress is also vital. By reviewing what has worked and what has not worked for you in the past you are essentially writing your own owner’s manual.
Keeping this journal will provide extremely valuable as the years go by. If you find a good tip, a great affirmation, or a good idea you have a place to right it down. Then at anytime you can go back and review your notes to find what you are looking for.
As a last note, remember that if you do use affirmations, use them with emotion. For most people affirmations do not work because they do not say them with emotion.
Inject some more passion into your affirmations and you should see results very quickly. Say affirmations that are framed in the positive and not the negative. State what you want. Don’t state what you don’t want.
There are important points that you need to consider in building self confidence. When you are successful in following these points, you can make your self more productive.
